Villa Concordia Resort & Spa

We were a little unsure about this property when we reached our last stop, after a few things had made me question the choice. It turned out to be probably the best stay of the trip. The six-storey building has only 10 rooms, two suites and eight standard rooms. Our suite was huge at 91 sqm, with two rooms and all the amenities we needed for five days. The beds were very comfortable, the bath was laid out perfectly, the kitchenette was just right for two, and the WiFi was excellent. The TV had no English, though. Having the seafood market so accessible suited us perfectly. There are lots of places nearby. The morning and seafood market is 5-10 minutes away by car, and it’s 15 minutes up the mountain. The lobby felt a bit crowded but homely, and the staff were sensational and helpful throughout. It was a lovely, welcoming place. The top-floor restaurant has a terrace, and we thoroughly enjoyed breakfast. Just three people ran it, the service manager, a chef and his assistant. The chef was already 70 and still served delightful breakfasts with incredible attention to detail. The food was classic, very well prepared and presented. We had to choose our dining time in advance, which was new to us but easy enough. The set menu alternated between Western one day and Japanese the next, and was perfectly balanced. Parking was simple, just around the corner, since the building itself has no parking space. It was only a two-minute walk. We felt completely relaxed here and enjoyed our time. The breakfast was a top-notch experience, and the rooms and staff were excellent too. During our ten-day family trip through Sapporo, Otaru and Haneda, this hotel surpassed all the others we stayed at.

The room was spotless, and the welcome dessert, black sesame pudding, was amazing. I enjoyed it with jazz playing on the old-fashioned audio system, which made for just the right kind of Western-style experience. The staff were welcoming, and the cozy lounge had a good selection of books and free drinks. I’d definitely stay again next time I’m in Hakodate.

We loved our three nights here. The place felt intimate and private, and the respectful staff made us feel like VIPs throughout. Our room was spacious and comfortable. I really enjoyed the manual grinder coffee, and breakfast was a spread that changed each day. The lobby also had complimentary wine and a sweet pudding to welcome us.
