We came just for dinner this time, with no overnight stay. Our 5:30 PM reservation meant we were seated earlier in the day than on our last visit, and the fresh greenery outside the window was lovely. The gala dinner came with three appetizers and was filling and satisfying. Chef Katsumata used local produce in inventive combinations that caught the eye and smelled wonderful. The bread was delicious too. Service was cheerful and prompt, and the local Japanese black tea was excellent. The breakfast is so generous and delicious that it’s hard to finish, so next time I’d like to stay overnight and take my time with the meal.

The lack of a TV or clock in the room was a plus, and lighting a fire in the fireplace for the first time was such a relaxing break from everyday life. I stayed for two days and one night in March. The food was delicious, and the presentation was like art. I looked forward to each dish being brought to me. The weather wasn’t great, and it rained from the next morning, but the staff were very helpful with planning my sightseeing route. The people who welcomed me and the manager were all friendly. It’s a wonderful auberge I’d like to return to.

Our classic Western-style room was relaxing and let us enjoy the natural surroundings. From the terrace, the fountain sounded like a little stream, which made for a lovely atmosphere. The hot springs felt just like Hakone springs. There were only two other guests during our quiet-day stay. Dinner was unusual in a good way, and the seafood dishes were especially impressive and delicious. The relaxed pace of the course meal gave us about three hours to enjoy it fully. The wine at both dinner and breakfast was very satisfying. Service across the accommodation and meals matched the price. It’s an auberge where you can unwind in a resort setting with nature and good food.

We’d never tried a full-course French meal before, and this recent auberge visit was a lovely experience. The food was delicious, with every dish made from local ingredients, and the staff showed excellent attention to detail and hospitality. We’d like to come back in a different season. Thanks to all the staff who looked after us.

The food was excellent, and the stay was very comfortable. I only had two disappointments: the toilet didn’t have a heated seat or washlet, and the old shower head in my room constantly leaked hot water from its handle. I recently visited Hakone Auberge Au Mirador, where you can try French cuisine by legendary chef Katsumata Noboru. It’s described as Japan’s first auberge of its kind. An auberge is a restaurant with lodging in a rural or suburban area, centered on authentic food made with local ingredients. The Japan Auberge Association currently has 39 auberges and runs a stamp rally. Stay at six and you get one free night.
