The private onsen we were assigned was beautiful, with a lovely forest view. That was the highlight. The room itself was quite ordinary, and overall the property felt average. What left us disappointed was the lack of communication, flexibility, and value for money. To be clear, the original mix-up was our fault. We booked through Japanican, didn't get a confirmation email, and assumed it hadn't gone through, so we made a second reservation for the same dates and property on Booking.com. Both bookings were under exactly the same names, mine and my husband's, but no one contacted us before we arrived to check whether they were duplicates. At check-in, the owner pointed out the two reservations and suggested they could be for different guests, despite the identical names. We were charged for two rooms even though we only used one. I understand the duplicate booking came from our mistake, but a message before arrival could have cleared it up and let us cancel one reservation.

My partner and I are vegetarians, which made the kaiseki meal tricky. The staff put together a vegan tasting menu for us overnight, and it was delicious as well as very considerate. Thanks to the Nagominoyado staff. The room was incredibly comfortable. Between the huge windows and the cozy bedding, the stay felt as restorative as camping out in the woods, the kind of comfort that could raise the dead.

We had a lovely stay in this traditional Ryokan. The views were amazing, the natural hot spring baths were great, and having a private bath felt like a real luxury. Service was lovely too, and the food was amazing in a dining room with a beautiful view. I'd read reviews mentioning construction noise, but it didn't affect our stay at all. You're right next to the start of the Hakone Ropeway, which is a great location. I'd recommend staying here, enjoy Hakone and relax.

The private onsen was such a relaxing way to end each day. Our suite was huge, spotless, and had a lot of charm; it felt like having our own place. The restaurant views were gorgeous, and the quiet setting made the location feel ideal for catching buses. We had breakfast and dinner every day. Both were beautifully presented, delicious, and filling. I couldn’t manage the snail, though! Staff were consistently polite and attentive whenever we needed something. I know some other reviews were negative, but our stay was lovely. So far, this has been our favorite place in Japan, and I’d happily recommend it based on our experience.

That private bath was easily my favorite part. I also really liked the meals, especially how much thought went into presenting all the courses. The food was very good. Our room attendant was lovely, answered our questions, and explained each dish. The location made getting around convenient too: Sounzan station is about a five-minute walk away, with the cable car from Gora and the ropeway toward Lake Ashi. I had a great time, and felt the price was fair for what we got. I’d recommend it.
