Hakuba Yamano Hotel

Monica, the manager, and her husband made our Christmas stay in Hakuba feel so welcoming. The staff and management went out of their way to make sure we enjoyed ourselves, and they helped with transport and suggestions for local restaurants and snow spots. The location is great too. Hotel Yamano was a 10/10 for us, and I’d highly recommend it.

The breakfast was a real highlight, with eggs, sausage, salad, croissants, and coffee, including cappuccino from an automatic dispenser. The hotel has a well-kept onsen on the first floor, and the lobby displays some photos from the Nagano games. It’s right across from the ski jumping stadium, which enthusiasts may want to visit, and you can walk to Hakuba village from there. The Swiss chalet-style building has a friendly feel, and the service was kind.

The team’s help with rentals, ski passes, and rides to the resorts or airport made everything easy. Breakfast is included, with plenty of choice and good coffee, and everyone sits together before heading out. There’s also a bar for a drink and a chat with other skiers after the day. Our room was clean and roomy, and the bed was really comfortable. I felt at home from the moment we arrived for our three days, and was nearly in tears when it was time to leave. After five days, it was clear how much of a family affair this hotel is. Monica, her husband, and their two kids were around, and that gave the place a sweet, welcoming feel. They’re also making small efforts to be more eco-friendly, like bathroom lights that turn off when unused and a fridge you can switch off. Monica listened patiently when I asked about cutting down on disposable chopsticks and coffee cups, and she gave us useful skiing recommendations. We met some lovely guests over beers after skiing, before dinner. The restaurant is well worth trying, and breakfast each day was delicious. The onsen, sauna, and cold soak were a big treat after skiing. We’d definitely come back.
