The beds were fairly comfortable, and the room was okay. Breakfast was buffet-style and actually pretty decent. But I booked for the kaiseki dinner and onsen after reading the good reviews, and was very disappointed. Dinner was tiny and tasteless apart from the big bowl of equally bland rice. The miso soup was among the worst I've tried. The waiter put everything down at once, then never returned for the empty dishes or to top up our tea. The onsen was just okay, with one indoor bath and two small outdoor ones. It was frustrating that it closed in the morning. This was the first hotel or ryokan where I couldn't use the onsen in the morning. The building felt like an old Western-style hotel that needed renovation. It's far from everything, and I wouldn't return. Too expensive for what you get.

The room was spacious and had an authentic feel, and the onsen was really nice. Everyone on staff was kind and attentive to us. It's also suitable for older guests. They offered free DanDan Men late at night during our stay, and I can safely say it was the best Dandan men I've ever had!

The onsen was very good, and the staff were exceptionally helpful. The building is old and not much to look at from outside, but it's been renovated and felt clean and comfortable. The location is a residential area in the middle of nowhere, with no restaurants or bars nearby. You'll need a car and should order meals at the hotel. Still, Horyuji Temple, a World Heritage site, is only 15 minutes away. If you're coming from Osaka, visiting Shigi-mountain first, staying a night, then heading to NARA, it could work well. Prices went up by 50% after My Stays/Kamenoi took over, and I'm not sure they were justified. I went because of a local government travel promotion. I'd return in spring or autumn if the price were attractive.
