We had a fun, peaceful stay at TOMO-san stay with the family, and he didn’t mind when the kids did something naughty. There’s a small pond with fish and an outdoor barbecue. He treated us to breakfast and dinner, plus a surprise Japanese Nabe and sushi. He and his friend suggested new routes and places to visit during the autumn foliage, which made the time there well worth it.

A lovely guesthouse with a wonderful host, close to both Furukawa and Takayama. Very reasonably priced too!

This seems to be a cheap, room-only inn, though I haven’t stayed there myself. I’m sharing this for reference. When I called to ask about a weekday stay for one guest, I was refused with various excuses. I was told it would be wasteful or too much trouble to allocate a room to a single person. This happened three times. It’s really disappointing, as I’d hoped to make it my regular place when fishing on the Miyagawa River. For comparison, Minshuku Horaguchi is a popular room-only inn in Okuhida. It was fully booked online, but when I called on the day of my stay, they managed to squeeze me in. I wondered if this flexibility was one reason it was popular, but my experience here was the complete opposite. The other reviews seem to be from foreign families or groups, and I haven’t seen any from solo travelers. I think that’s mostly consistent with what happened to me.
