Aoki minshuku was a friendly, comfortable place to rest our tired bodies and get ready for the next day’s walk. I may be biased since it was my first minshuku, but dinner and breakfast were especially memorable for how much food there was. After an 8hour walk from Yokokawa to Karuizawa via the Nakasendo, I felt I’d earned several meals and happily ate every bit. It was all delicious. We somehow missed the side road that leads straight to the minshuku, but an observant elderly resident came to our rescue. You should be able to spot it from the main road. Just watch for the side roads as you walk, and look for the owl figurine outside the house.

Maybe it was because I visited on a weekday, but the other guests were all construction workers. They seemed to be regulars, smoking in the dining room and talking loudly. I felt uncomfortable, and I wouldn’t recommend staying here on weekdays, at least.

The room was decent, and the food was delicious. The rice was so good I went back for seconds. I might put on weight if I stayed a long time! If I have another business trip here, I’d like to stay again.

I stayed in the separate cottage. It was very reasonably priced, and new, clean, and comfortable. I could rent a bicycle for 500 yen and enjoyed exploring Karuizawa.
