Hajime-san and his wife Noriko-san were really friendly hosts. The garden is beautiful, and there's a spot to work. Beds are comfy, with a lamp and enough sockets, plus somewhere to leave your bags. Toilets were clean, and the kitchen and shower room have basics like soap and shampoo, with towels for rent. For the price, it's great, just don't expect too much. The only downside for me was slow Wifi.

The guesthouse sits by a lovely canal in a quiet area, still within reach of the castle. The owners were helpful and friendly. Its shared space is in a 100-year-old house, while the dorm is new. I had lots of privacy since nobody else was staying that night, though it might feel different when the place is full.

Hikone has the traditional feel of Kyoto with far fewer crowds and less touristy fuss, which suited me. The new dorm area is great, and the owners' shared house is a renovated traditional home, about 100 years old, with lots of antiques. Sitting there and looking into the garden made me picture old Japan and the way people lived. This is the best guest house I've stayed at.

Hajime and Noriko, a young couple, make the place feel homelike and comfortable. It's a good fit for backpackers, cyclists, and motorbike travelers, and everyone is welcome. The lodging is new and clean, with garden views from the dorms, alongside a partly refurbished old traditional house. There's a supermarket nearby.
