Sun City Katsuta Hotel

I was charged for my booking, but when I arrived at 2 AM for a 9 PM reservation, the older man at the front desk wouldn't let me check in. They wouldn't refund me either. It felt like a scam, and the staff seemed to have something against foreigners.

The worst hotel I've stayed at in Japan.

June 1, 2026. Lawson and Donki are nearby, and JR Katsuta Station is about a five-minute walk away. Reviews seem divided, but I think it's a good fit for solo travelers or people on a budget, and I'd recommend it. The rooms have bathrooms but no bathtub, apparently because the plumbing is old. You can use the large public bath instead. Breakfast is free and very traditional Japanese style, made by an elderly lady. I thought it was delicious. The breakfast cafeteria is also the Indian restaurant, which I highly recommend for its low prices, good food, and generous portions. A couple of things to know: you have to leave your key at the front desk even for a short outing, then pick it up when you return. There is no elevator to the second floor, so you'll have to carry your luggage.

The free washing machines and dryers were appreciated. Still, the place felt dirty, and the communal bath was awkward to use because there are no lockers. The guest room shower temperature was hard to adjust, and we couldn't soak in the tub. It seems there may be a drainage problem. You can hear everything from the hallway, so anyone sensitive to noise might want to bring earplugs.
