The private forest onsen was the highlight for us. You can book it for 60 minutes, and there are two open-air baths among the trees, one with natural hot spring water. Sitting there under the stars at night was unforgettable. The hotel itself is a striking concrete and glass building by architect Atsushi Kitagawara, set in nature. Inside, it’s modern and minimal, with wood floors and Western furniture, no tatami or sliding doors. We stayed two nights in a spacious room with two large beds, a sitting area, closet, and a big balcony with lounge chairs. The glass-enclosed tub looked out onto the forest, with a separate shower and WC. Everything was spotless and beautifully designed. Breakfast can be served in the lounge or room. It’s a set with Japanese and Western items, including croissants, yogurt, fruit, salad, soup, and a freshly made omelet, plus juice and coffee or tea. It was fresh and tasty, though the same both mornings. Dinner is at the neighboring steakhouse run by the same operator. The half-board four-course steak menu was excellent, and a pescatarian option is available on request. Service was friendly, and it was easy to walk over. A few small things could be better: the coffee was weak in the room and at breakfast, the whiskey bar selection was limited, and the toilet area’s motion-sensor light and music couldn’t be turned off. Still, it’s a beautiful design hotel in a peaceful setting, with great service and a very special private onsen.

The team were warm, professional, and really accommodating about what we needed. They made our stay special. The whiskey bar was a nice extra, and the Keith Haring museum is curated wonderfully. Highly recommend.

Takaki, Mariko, and the rest of the team at Hotel Keyforest made our stay one we’ll never forget. They helped me arrange a marriage proposal, and everything went perfectly. Planning that in a foreign country was stressful, and I couldn’t have managed it without them. Honestly, I think they were even more invested and nervous about it going well than I was, lol. Their attention to detail, hospitality, and professionalism made that moment so special. Thank you, and we’ll see you again soon.

The rooms and views are lovely, and the staff are incredibly helpful, happy to arrange activities in the area. There’s plenty to do both indoors and out. It’s tucked away in Kobuchizawa and is a must for Keith Haring fans. It’s on the expensive side, with no dinner included, but there’s a steakhouse next door. With no traffic, it takes roughly 2 hours from Tokyo.

The rooms were gorgeous and spacious, with amazing mountain views, and we loved the whiskey bar on site. We were staying for two nights while visiting the nearby Hakushu distillery. It was our first time venturing outside Japan’s major cities, and we weren’t sure what to expect. To our surprise, this became one of the best hotels we’ve ever stayed at, even compared with some really great ones. The staff were very accommodating. When we wanted a different restaurant on our second night, they drove us there and back. We also loved the private hot springs and spa area, about a three-minute walk from the hotel. The Keith Haring Museum next door took us around 30 minutes to see, with lots of cool artwork. Such a great experience. We’d love to return!
