I loved how tucked away the villas felt, with forest all around and loads of privacy. Inside, the design mixes modern comforts with traditional touches like a tatami area. Outside, there’s a private garden with a small hot spring tub and a larger, cooler pool. The breakfasts were good, and the kaiseki dinners were excellent, though pricey. The hotel itself isn’t cheap either. Staff were rarely around, and English-speaking help depended on the shift. The only real drawback was the very slow Wi-Fi. Even in the forest, it wasn’t too hard to find by car, and Google Maps got the location right. Such an amazing stay.

I enjoyed the onsen and pool in this quiet, tucked-away setting. The grounds have some signs of age, though I didn’t find them too distracting. Staff were polite throughout, and they even drove us between the front desk and our room in a cart. The drainage was poor, which bothered me. Anyone uncomfortable with bugs might have trouble using the pool or open-air bath.

The narrow roads worried me most. Cars can’t pass each other, and there are no guardrails, so there’s a risk of going over the cliff. Anyone driving a large car or who isn’t confident behind the wheel should take care, and normal tires may not be enough in snow. The price is high to start with, so peak-season visitors expecting a lot could be disappointed. Inside, the building looks old, with peeling wallpaper and scuffs. My feet were cold in the room and dining area in midwinter, and the signal was poor. Bugs were around even in winter, so I imagine summer could be awful if you hate them. On days below 5°C, the heated pool felt quite cold, so bring a rash guard and long sleeves. There were good parts too: the food was delicious, the spring water was nice, and the pool was fun. I also liked the sunken kotatsu table, and the staff were kind.

Rain fell for most of my stay, so I’d like to return when the weather is sunny, even though getting here takes some effort. The one thing I wished for was a few parasols around the edges, so we could enjoy the open-air bath in the rain. The room was clean and had no problems, the food was impeccable, and the staff were warm and attentive. Front desk staff were always smiling, and we were given a shuttle cart each time. Aside from the rain, I had no complaints.

We had a comfortable family stay, and the staff were really friendly. Our daughter, who was two at the time and hates bugs, screamed quite a bit. Since the place is deep in the mountains, insect repellent stickers seem like a good precaution. The pool was spacious and there was an open-air bath, so we could all relax together. The food was delicious too. You can get around by cart, but we also enjoyed walking. We have another child now and plan to come back when he turns two.
