The rooms are small, old-style Japanese spaces, but they’re kept really clean and with care. The owners are warm and make you feel at home. Meals feature all sorts of wild local meat, from monkey, bear and deer to boar, hornets and crickets. A great taste of rural hospitality.

A lovely place in a region that still feels undiscovered, with mountain scenery and excellent local food. We’d definitely come back.

The bed in the room I had this time wasn’t very comfortable, though the large shared bath was spacious and pleasant. The cooking was spot on, especially the grilled amago trout, and the owner treated us to sake infused with hornets and vipers. We were looked after really well. If you’re nearby, I’d recommend staying here. Just be open to the tsukudani (pickled insects) at breakfast. They’re delicious.

December 13, 2014 The locust tsukudani and bear were especially tasty. We were taken to and from the Shimotsuki Festival, and after coming back cold, the bath felt great. The game-based dishes and the care we received throughout made for wonderful hospitality.

The rooms and building are simple rather than fancy, but everything was clean and comfortable. The bath isn’t a hot spring; it uses heated groundwater and feels very nice. The main draw is the food, which makes careful use of the mountain ingredients of Nagano and shows real respect for the animals. The owner is also a terrific host. Come hungry, though, and game meat may not suit anyone with strong food preferences.
