The lobby view is incredible, especially after dark, and the bike rental place is right next door, so getting ready for an island-hopping trip is easy. The hotel has a slightly 70s or 80s feel, and some facilities are dated, but I found that added to its authentic charm. The staff were lovely and went out of their way to help, even though their English was very poor. The restaurant mostly serves Western food, which was quite decent and a welcome change after three weeks without it. Breakfast, on the other hand, was Japanese and very good. I’d love to come back and do more cycling.

The restaurant food was very good and reasonably priced, and it seemed to attract people who weren’t staying at the hotel too. From our room, we had a view of the bridge, which was great. We stayed in Western-style room 201, which felt a little strange. With its electric adjustable beds, oversized entry door, and emergency call buttons by each bed, it reminded me of a hospital room. If I return, I’d ask for a Japanese-style room. We brought our own bikes, so I can’t speak to the rental service, though they appeared to have a huge fleet.

The view from this nice place is great, but renting a bike was hectic and crowded, even on a weekday. Their cross bikes are very good. They recommended an electric mini-bike for my wife, though, and it wasn’t a good fit for the Shimanami Kaido ride. If you rent here, book ahead and work out for yourself which bike suits you. Don’t rely on them to pick the right one for you.

The room faced the bridge, and the view was fascinating. I was impressed by the bathroom too. Great service during our one-night stay, and a great starting point for a cycling trip.

The ride from here to Onomichi took us about six hours and forty-five minutes. We set off at 9:30 a.m. and returned the bikes in Onomichi around 4:15 p.m., so it’s doable in a day even if you don’t cycle often. We also sent our luggage on to Onomichi for 2200 yen per piece. You can drop it off between 8 and 10 a.m. and collect it at a hotel there from 6 to 7 p.m., even if you aren’t staying at that hotel. Since it was Monday morning, there was no wait, and we got bikes quickly without a reservation. They were in good enough shape for the 70 km ride, though I’d suggest bringing a seat cushion to make the ride more comfortable. Everyone was friendly. The man handing over the bikes explained how to use them and even gave me a rubber band for my wide pant leg so it wouldn’t catch in the gears, which was thoughtful. My Japanese is intermediate, but the important information was also written in English on the slip they gave us, so you don’t need to worry if you’re unsure about understanding everything.
