The dinners are the standout here. Mine was included, and it was a proper traditional Japanese course meal that clearly had a real chef behind it. Breakfast was included too, but the choices were limited, though it was OK. My room was traditional Japanese style, with tatami, a low table and seats, another table, two armchairs, a TV, fridge, safe, AC, hot water dispenser, and tea set. Staff put out a futon at bedtime. They also provide slippers, yukata and obi, and towels, and it's fine to walk around in a yukata. There's no bathroom in the room, just a toilet and sink. Guests are meant to use the public bath, though there seem to be showers on the 4F. The public bath is old but works fine, with indoor and outdoor baths and about 15 washing stations, so I didn't have to wait. The hotel feels very old-school and could really use renovations. It's around 4 km from Itoigawa station, about a 45-minute walk. A taxi costs about 2000¥, or you can take the forest road across the river if you walk. It's a decent place for a short break.

For the real traditional Japanese hotel experience, this is a great place to come.

Just average. Keep your expectations low.

On my way back from climbing Mt. Shiratori, I stopped in for the day-use hot springs. I was muddy, so apologies for that. The big public bath felt wonderfully open and spacious. The outdoor bath was the temperature I like, and the water seemed to be flowing in quite strongly. I had the place nearly to myself, soaking under a blue sky with nature all around. It felt like a real luxury. I didn't notice a smell, though I know some people mention one. There may be a slight regional mineral smell, but I think there's no need to worry much about it. The spring water seems high in salt, and it warmed me through. A lot of the tiredness from the climb eased. Staff were very helpful and explained things well, and the fresh Bletilla striata flowers were a lovely touch. They're my favorite flowers. I also heard that most payment methods work for day visitors. The website lists the SuiPay app or cash, but...
