Guesthouse Rico in Wakayama was a very pleasant place to stay, with an extremely clean house, very friendly staff, and a genuinely warm, home-like feel. My one personal concern was seeing a bird in a cage and a fish in a very small bowl. I believe a bird should be free to fly and a fish should be able to swim freely, as a cat can wander and choose where to sleep. This is just my own view, not a criticism of the guesthouse or staff, both of which were excellent. I gave three stars because I took off one for each animal. Without that, this would easily have been a five-star experience.

I wish I’d had longer to spend at this fantastic hostel. It’s beautifully decorated and very arty, with great facilities, including a kitchen, communal area, and showers. The staff were very friendly and spoke English, which was nice. I’d highly recommend stopping here.

I’m really glad I got to stay for two nights at this amazing guesthouse. The facilities were great, and there was a lovely cafe. The sweetest little kintarō (finch) was there to greet you.

The neighborhood feels relaxed and calm, with a friendly local vibe, though there are adult establishments nearby. The guesthouse is also a bit far from train stations. It’s a nice, clean hostel with kind staff, a small clean kitchen, and a big shared space used as a cafe, with a bar at night. That common area is often unavailable when people rent it for events, which is a bit annoying. Still, I think it’s a good guesthouse overall. 👍🏼

A lovely hostel, thoughtfully run, with great staff. There’s a bar and dining area where locals come too. I’d happily book it again.
