I’ve stayed at a lot of locally run Japanese hotels and guesthouses, but I’ve never seen a facility in Japan in such terrible condition. They couldn’t give me a non-smoking room, so I turned around and stayed somewhere else.

It’s an old place, but the price is reasonable and the location is convenient. There’s a hot spring on the top floor and a convenience store nearby that stays open late. After 9 or 10 pm you can’t get through the station to reach the store, so you have to walk around it. I don’t think there was a coffee pot in the room.

It’s really cheap and not a bad hotel, but being so close to Beppu Station was a downside for me. You can hear trains coming and going early in the morning, which could be a problem if you’re a light sleeper. The rooms are okay, though a bit old. Nishitetsu Resort Inn Beppu is only a few blocks away and might suit you better if you want somewhere more modern.

Good value for the money, with an excellent location and a large room for the price. It’s an older, worn-down place, but it’s looked after. Everything worked, and the staff were helpful.
