The restaurant and bar were nice, and the onsen was modern, spacious, and pleasant. I was also impressed by the manga game in the relaxation den. Still, our stay came with several hassles, and I felt we were being charged extra for everything, with much more thrift than hospitality. There were problems with towel availability for the onsen, room amenities, and how quickly staff responded to our questions. If you book through an OTA, keep all your receipts. We had to show confirmation emails to prove that we’d paid for a room with breakfast included after the hotel disputed it. My mother-in-law was told she wasn’t entitled to breakfast and that the rooms hadn’t been prepaid, though both claims were clearly wrong. From my experience in hospitality, it seemed newer staff had trouble reading OTA reservations in the hotel’s internal interface, POS, and backend systems. Japan is clearly facing labor shortages, and smaller towns have a hard time finding and training new staff, especially when Japanese managers are training foreign hires who speak Japanese but aren’t native-level. Mascos was otherwise a clean, functional Japanese onsen hotel, much as expected.

The restaurant was a real surprise, with delicious food and a menu that had a lot of variety. The Onsen was very good too. At this price, I’d give it 5 stars. I enjoyed my 2 day stay at this little gem, and it’s perfectly placed for a train trip to Tsuwana.

The onsen was a highlight, relaxing and well maintained, and it’s especially impressive that tattoos are allowed, which is rare and forward-thinking in Japan. MASCOS Hotel Masuda Onsen is clean, modern, and thoughtfully designed, with spotless, comfortable rooms and good amenities. The staff were welcoming and lovely, and the location makes it easy to explore Masuda. It’s a great mix of style, comfort, and hospitality. Highly recommended.

The public bath had a spa-like feel and was well equipped and relaxing. Staff greeted us warmly, and the room was sleek, modern, and comfortable. It made for a restful stop on our trip.

We booked Mascos Hotels for the price and location while travelling around Japan by train. As UK visitors, we really liked the stylish Japanese decor in the hotel and room, and the bed was extremely comfortable. We slept so well. The staff were lovely everywhere, and guests can use the beautiful onsen for free. Breakfast had plenty to choose from and the staff were friendly there too. The restaurant is wonderful, with really enjoyable food and drinks, but it’s popular and small, so book ahead for dinner. The one thing that jarred was having to pay a small fee to stay an hour past checkout. That felt a bit mean for just one hour. Thanks for having us!
