Japanese Inn Hotel Matsukiso

The tent, futons, and the rest of the hotel all seemed well looked after, so we still don’t know how the bedbug got there. We had chosen the tent room, and with guests turning over often, someone may have left it behind. We’re careful about bedbugs and always inspect where we stay, but I spotted this one almost by accident while checking possible hiding places. It was an unfortunate end to an otherwise very pleasant stay. The person at the front desk, who may have been the manager, handled it very professionally, apologized repeatedly, and refunded the cost of our stay. The owner was understanding, and seemed to know how serious a bedbug problem can be. We’re leaving this review so future guests are aware of the possibility.

For ¥1600, I got a tent in an air-conditioned room, with a comfortable futon setup and crisp, clean linens. It’s within walking distance of the nearby onsens, and guests can use a free tattoo-friendly onsen. Excellent value.

The staff were so kind and welcoming, and said they hope to attract more international guests in the future. Their hospitality stood out, and I’d happily come back. I spent two nights here in Beppu, one with a friend and one alone, and used the open space on Wednesday morning. The building and baths are showing their age, but they’re impeccably clean, which suits the cozy, nostalgic atmosphere. It was a relaxing stay for a reasonable price, and a great way to experience Beppu’s distinctive feel. I recommend it to domestic and international travelers.

The hot spring was pleasantly soothing, and the whole stay brought back memories of school trips. I could hear faint laughter from the next room, while sleeping on a futon over the bedding on tatami mats. Some parts of the hotel look old if you take a close look, but it’s excellent value. I spent one night here with a friend on our Kyushu trip, and the accommodation honestly exceeded my expectations. Thank you for such a good stay.
