Iwanai Kogen Hotel

We visited in summer, and the sea view was lovely. The onsen was properly hot, and there was a very cozy lounge with free-flow coffee and soft drinks. I imagine it would be just as appealing in winter.

We had a wonderful time at the hotel, the onsen, and the brewery. I'd recommend it for a trip with family or friends.

The onsen was a highlight, especially the outdoor one, and the staff were very nice. Tattoos didn't seem to be an issue. The free private bath gets booked up very early, though. Our room's decor looked quite old, even if the air conditioner was new. Since the hotel is far from town, I expected more things like snacks or sandwiches to buy, but there weren't any. We enjoyed our stay, but it felt a little too expensive given that the place could use a decent refurbishment. One lovely surprise next door was a collection of Picasso paintings.

We spent three nights here and had a great time. The staff were the most helpful and attentive to guests' well-being that I've come across at a hotel. The multi-course Japanese dinner and Japanese-style bedroom made for a full traditional experience, and you can choose a public or private onsen at fair prices. They also put on cultural activities, including rice cake making (mochitsuki). English is understood to some extent, so you can get by, though a little Japanese helps and is appreciated. The ski resort nearby, about 1 minute by car, is small but quiet and well suited to beginners. More advanced skiers can also check out the CAT tours.
