Our time here was a real highlight of Japan. Kayotei is elegant, and our room was more like a stunning suite. From it, we could look out over trees in a ravine and a flowing stream while soaking in our private onsen. It was peaceful and dreamy, so we made good use of it. The staff were warm and welcoming, and the service was second to none. The meals were extraordinary too. One afternoon we spent time with two local artisans connected with Kayotei. We made washi paper, arranged flowers we’d picked on a walk, took part in a tea ceremony, and watched a wooden cup being made in a beautiful, simple workshop. We also walked through the gorge, stopping at a shrine in the woods and a cafe by the river. On the way back, we browsed several lovely little shops in town.

For a relaxing stay surrounded by nature, Kayotei is a lovely choice. There are trails nearby, including some along a river, and Kaga Onsen train station isn’t far away. We had a wonderful time, and the staff were so attentive.

We brought our baby, and everyone was unbelievably sweet to them. The owner even went out of his way to find me a matcha whisk because I didn’t have time to go out and get one myself. Such a great experience! The room had its own naturally heated tub, and even the shampoo and conditioner were the best I’ve ever used. I ended up buying some to take home. The place looks even better in person than in the pictures.

The nearby town was a treat, with artisan goods and an adorable coffee shop. But The Kayotei was the highlight of our trip to Japan. The rooms were comfortable and impressive, and every detail in the special Ryokan felt carefully considered and high quality. I could have spent hours in the beautiful Onsen. Service was above and beyond, from the warm greeting at the door to being escorted to dinner and having our room turned down while we ate. The owner even stopped by to say hello during dinner. Jiro and his team will take excellent care of you. If you’re this far into looking for a Ryokan, you’ve found it!

My only regret is not staying longer. I’d love to come back, perhaps to visit the local artisans too. The breakfast was just as amazing as dinner, though lighter in flavor. I don’t usually bother with breakfast, but I got up for this one. It was well worth it. The room was serene and restful, with an outdoor onsen facing the forest. The water was just the right temperature. There were Ralph Lauren bathrobes and some Shiseido products as well. Throughout the ryokan, details like the layout, beautiful kutani ware pottery, and Japanese flower arrangements made the place feel top notch. Dinner was better than meals I’ve had at top notch restaurants. You could taste the care and planning in every dish, and the tableware and cups were lovely. Chef Yutaka Ebihara san brought out the sweet, mellow flavors of Autumn. I appreciated the use of local ingredients, including some that are rarely found outside the Kanazawa region. The hairy crab was prepared thoughtfully, so it was easy to enjoy the flesh. The ingredients had clearly been chosen meticulously, and I loved the flavors. There was so much food that I saved dessert for later. The English menu translation didn’t do the dishes justice, so I was grateful that the service staff took time to explain them.
