Green Guest House Kagoshima - Hostel

The only good part was the welcome. A very kind staff member explained the house rules and let me stay on the first floor from around 11 until 15pm, when check-in started. The whole building smelled bad, and the apartment shook the entire time. In the female dorm I saw piles of clothes hanging from beds, and in the shared living room a man watched baseball and the news in the morning. I first thought they were travelers and tried saying hi, but they avoided eye contact and went back to their beds. I felt unsafe throughout my stay, and, like someone else said, I felt homeless. I wouldn’t recommend this place if you want a fun, clean stay. I think it’s better to pay a little more for a hotel.

The staff are friendly, and the rooms are consistently clean. It’s a simple but comfortable place, and I often stay here when I’m taking the ferry.

The location is a plus, fairly close to downtown and Kagoshima Aquarium. The rooms are stuffy, though, and there aren’t many shower rooms or toilets. The host doesn’t provide towels or razors, and guests even have to buy their own bottle of drinking water. It’s quite okay otherwise.

The location near the port was probably the one good thing. The male staff member wasn’t polite, and despite having lived in Japan for 4 years, this was the first time I felt someone was rude to me just because I was a foreigner. Their sign also used a poor analogy, equating wearing sandals or even slippers inside with getting raped.
