Sun Days Kagoshima

The neighborhood apparently stays lively late. I was already in bed by 9pm, but one morning at 4:00am I saw a drunk girl in the gutter with her rather helpless boyfriend nearby. I gave her the complimentary hotel water, so that was an unexpected bonus. I stayed about a week, and the room was tiny, but the bed was comfortable, which was what I’d paid for. They also served complimentary curry in the evening, and the location was great. My bicycle had covered parking. 2024

We had a twin room with plenty of space, including an armchair, a desk and chair, and lots of open floor area. From the window we could see the city and Sakurajima. The hotel was quiet inside, even though the streets nearby had plenty of bars and restaurants and were busy at night. I enjoyed walking around there, though nightlife itself isn’t really my thing. There’s also lots of public transport and a large covered shopping arcade within walking distance. Most of the other guests seemed to be Japanese businessmen. Breakfast was a buffet with a mix of Japanese and Western food. I wasn’t familiar with everything, and some dishes weren’t what I’d normally have in the morning, but I still found plenty I liked. I did miss having hot tea, since the only tea available was cold green tea. The check-in process was easy for us as people who don’t speak Japanese. There was an English option on the counter display, plus a voice that walked us through it, alongside help from the staff. Japanese hotels also impress me with their amenities: pajamas, bottled water, shampoo, conditioner, razors, a hair dryer, toothbrushes, and more. A lot of it used less plastic, which at least takes the edge off all the single-use items. We’d love to come back.

The breakfast had lots of variety and everything tasted really good. The hotel feels new, and the room was a decent size. I also liked being able to choose a shower room, since so many hotels only have the bathtub style.

It’s a cozy, clean place, with great WiFi for a really great price. Breakfast was good, though it was quite different from the food I’ve grown up enjoying. But trying new things and learning how other cultures live is part of why we travel. I’d stay again. Just be aware the rooms are very small. I’m over 6ft tall and about 260lbs.
