The hosts were what made this place stand out. When we ran into train problems before arriving, they kept in touch and helped us sort things out. Once we got there, they helped with our luggage, prepared tea, drew baths for us after days out, and even gave us a lift to the station when our departure happened to line up with theirs. Their English and hospitality felt more polished than what we'd had at better-known, much pricier hotels. Hostel Kamakura is a family-run place with only 3 6, so it felt more like staying in a guesthouse or homestay than a hotel or backpacker hostel. The rooms and shared spaces were cozy but comfortable, with a full kitchen, bath, shower, dining and seating areas, plus lots of books and visitor pamphlets about Kamakura and Japan. The monorail runs right by the building and rumbles past regularly, but the location is convenient and the house stays fairly quiet. It was an affordable, endearing place to rest, and one of our favorites during our 15 days in Japan.

We had a wonderful time here, and I'm sure we'll keep coming back. I stayed with my three children and friends, and the host's hospitality made it feel like home. The rooms and beds were cozy and comfortable. The host speaks English, and the bathrooms, one Japanese-style and one shower room, have English instructions. My kids loved the host and got to learn about Japanese history. You might even be able to see Mount Fuji from outside.

The garage works for a 30-series Alphard, though parking is a squeeze. I could back in with the top half of the windshield up, but there wasn't much room to get in or out of the driver's seat. Using the sliding doors was difficult too, though it was possible to park. The family's attentive care made the stay really pleasant. The rooms and shared facilities, including the kitchen, bathroom, toilet, and living room, aren't new, but everything was very clean and well kept. For sightseeing, the location is great: Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine is less than a 20-minute drive away. A truly lovely hostel I'd happily use again.
