The standout was the grilled crab. It brought out the crab’s umami really well. Dinner was a full Matsuba crab course, ending with rice porridge made with plenty of shredded meat from the crab’s body. My spouse has stayed here several times, so I felt at ease booking a one-night visit to try the seasonal Shibayama Matsuba crab. We reserved a private room with a bathroom. Meals are served in the dining area, where the Japanese-style room has sunken kotatsu seating, so we could relax while eating.

The inn was generally new and clean, and the food was delicious. It sits among rice fields in a remote spot, though you can see the sea. The bath was a little small, but there weren’t many guests, so it felt like we had it to ourselves. If I had one small complaint, the course wasn’t entirely crab, and I think a few other dishes would have been nice. Still, most people come to this area for crab, so perhaps that can’t be helped.

The bath was small but pleasant, and since it wasn’t crowded I enjoyed having it to myself. The building is still new and clean, with a simple, refined exterior and courtyard. From the property, you can see rice fields, but not the ocean. The location is neither especially good nor bad. The food was a letdown. There was about one and a half medium crabs per person, with an average amount of meat. Despite being close to the fishing port, the crab was frozen. It was my first ryokan visit, so I chose the basic course to see what it would be like. I wish the menu had been clearer, since then I could have picked a course that suited me better. The crab sashimi was still semi-frozen, like sorbet, and watery. It couldn’t taste good raw that way. The crab miso seemed like a mix of crab miso, white miso, and other ingredients presented as pure crab miso. We were told to eat it with raw Chinese cabbage. The red squid was understandable for the season and had been aged well, which brought out its flavor. The sweet shrimp had been handled poorly and was watery, though the shrimp itself still had flavor. The boiled white clams were delicious. With the Matsuba crab shabu-shabu, the frozen crab was hard to distinguish once cooked. They didn’t cook it with the kelp in the broth, so I cooked it myself after the waitress left. Grilled crab was better since it concentrated the flavor, but the meat didn’t come off easily. It was very salty, and I was thirsty for more than half a day afterward. The crab porridge still had scum on it, which I skimmed off myself. It included shoulder meat that had been boiled in a pot and thawed in the kitchen, but lots of shell pieces made it hard to pick through and eat. I was worried I might choke. The pickles looked like supermarket ones, and dessert wasn’t memorable. Service seemed organized as a conveyor system, with different people handling sashimi, grilled dishes, drinks, or porridge, so it was hard to get consistent attention and felt like efficiency came before customer satisfaction. The individual staff members were pleasant and welcoming, though, so I had no issue with them personally. A friend recommended this place for my first visit. I might have been more satisfied with a different course. The fishing grounds are close, and the building has a nice atmosphere, so the ingredients for a good ryokan are there. It depends on how it’s managed and run. I hope it becomes a great inn in a few years.

The waiter at dinner was very kind and offered to serve our leftover crab for breakfast. He did, already shredded, and we put it over rice for a bowl. There was more crab than I expected, and the hospitality was excellent. I booked one night from January 16, 2026, for three of us, including my second daughter, who’s a university student. My daughter is a Kakin Couple fan and had seen their video about taking the Kani Kani Hamakaze train and staying in Kasumi. We took the train to Nishiniya Kaika at Satsuma Station to celebrate her college acceptance. My spouse had stayed at this inn several times, so I felt reassured. We were the only ones who got off, and because our suitcases were heavy someone came to pick us up. The one-night, two-meal Kasumi course cost 30,800 yen. If you’re unsure where to stay, I highly recommend this place.

We were a family of five, and the kids were thrilled with how large the room was. There was more crab than we could eat, and we really enjoyed all the crab dishes. We’d love to go again if we get the chance.
