Higashiyama Kageroi

A lovely house, with friendly, helpful service.

I had a really comfortable stay in this clean, charming inn, a traditional townhouse updated in a modern Japanese style. The inner garden was lovely, and the bathroom had a modern feel with a great cypress scent. The location made it easy to get around on foot: Higashi Chaya District is nearby, and Tawaraya Ame's main store is just behind the building. I could shop for ingredients at the supermarket close by and cook with the well-equipped kitchen, which had pans, a rice cooker, and tableware. They also provided their own coffee, nice to have as a drip coffee after eating. The drum washer also washed and dried clothes, and underfloor heating kept my feet warm in the living room. The staff were very helpful, and I'd gladly stay with them again if I return to Kanazawa. One small thing, since I'd said in my confirmation email that I was driving, I wish they'd told me where to park ahead of time.

We chose this place because I wanted to stay in a traditional townhouse with my foreign friends while visiting Kanazawa, which still has so much Japanese charm. The staff were very kind at check-in, and the house was already warm and cozy when we arrived. I liked the stylish little details, the woody-smelling bathroom, and the latest-model washing machine. It seems like a nice inn for both small and large groups. Higashi Chayamachi and Omicho Market are nearby too!

Staying here with my family, who live far away, gave us a lovely experience we couldn't have had just anywhere. I'd wanted to try a Machiya Guesthouse for a long time, to experience life in a town I'd always dreamed about. The heated changing rooms and thoughtful touches throughout meant we never felt inconvenienced. The staff were friendly, and I was very happy with the stay. I'd love to come back if I get the chance. I was a little disappointed that the pretty courtyard was fully visible from the apartment building across the street, so we couldn't open the shoji screens very often.
