Kinjohro Kanazawa

The food was authentic Japanese, and our group had a great time trying flavors and dishes we'd never even imagined. The baths were deep and soothing at night. Rooms are simple, but staying there felt like an adventure, and I loved the authentic experience. If you need familiar Western comforts, this may not suit you. But if you enjoy adventure and really value authentic experiences, I highly recommend it.

The service was the highlight at Kinjohro. The staff were warm and attentive, and really seemed committed to making guests feel welcome. The rooms were huge, and there were so few other guests that the place felt peaceful and private, almost like we had it to ourselves. The rest didn't live up to the price. The property feels outdated in need of renovation, rather than charmingly historic, and didn't offer the refinement and comfort I expected for what Kinjohro charges. Dinner looked beautiful but was disappointing in flavor, and cost ¥60,000 for two. Breakfast was similarly average. For the price of the stay, the food and facilities didn't measure up. Kinjohro has potential, but until it's refreshed, I would have a hard time recommending it at this price.

My wife had 15,000 yen stolen from her bag just before checkout while we were at breakfast. Someone had come in to clean the room during that time. We're quite sure because she counted the money she'd have left for the rest of the trip before we ate. The person who took it left exactly the amount needed for checkout. It was around 100 euros, but the principle matters to us. Since we'd been robbed, we can't recommend this place. Dinner was good, but not excellent, and didn't justify the very high price. This was the most expensive hotel we stayed at in Japan, but it wasn't the best.

The service was world class, and the hotel itself is beautiful. Our room was spacious and spectacular. Having a traditional Japanese breakfast in a private room overlooking the beautifully kept garden became a precious memory for my wife and me. It was an incredible stay and experience. I wish I could give it more than five stars!
