Ryokan Oomasa

We first spent a few days at Mizuno nearly ten years ago, and coming back was just as enjoyable. The place feels intimate, with personal service and thoughtful details throughout, from fresh flowers and lovely wood and stonework to Karatsu ceramics used for both serving food and decoration. Its beachfront setting makes even a cup of tea feel special. At dinner, we watched the sea and sky shift through gorgeous colors as the evening went on. Mizuno is a truly wonderful place to stay in Karatsu.

We wanted some quiet time together as a family, and this was a cozy, peaceful place for that. The sea view from the room was great.

I already miss the stay and the food, and I'd definitely come back. The experience felt comfortable, quiet, and convenient, and the futon and pillow were full and supportive. I'm picky about hotel bedding, but we all slept well and woke up feeling fresh. There may have been a smell, though I imagine the area's constant humidity has something to do with it. The air conditioning was cold and strong, which suited our Canadian taste even with it over 40C outside. I didn't mind the noise, but the air felt too damp and heavy for me, so the system could use an upgrade or renewal. Make time for the ferry to Takashima Island too. Thank you 🙏

Dinner and breakfast were served in our room, and the food was incredible. Every part seemed in harmony, from the porcelain and presentation to the taste. Our waitress spoke little English and we spoke no Japanese, but we still had a good time, helped along by a huge English encyclopedia of Japanese food with color pictures. The inn felt welcoming and cozy, with excellent service. We stayed here in 2018, as well as at another ryokan in town, and this one was easily our favorite. It's smaller and older, which adds to its atmosphere. Our sea view was splendid, and the garden out front was delightful, though I'd strongly suggest booking a room facing the sea. The in-room bathroom was the biggest I've ever seen in Japan. The onsen isn't modernized, but it has charm, and with the inn being so small, I had it to myself.
