Ancient Hotel asama karuizawa

We were sorry to leave so soon. The forest setting is tucked away and wonderfully quiet, and I especially liked watching birds come to the feeders during breakfast after staff put out seed in the morning. Breakfast and dinner were fabulous, and the staff were extremely helpful and accommodating.

The food was excellent, and the onsen was quiet and good when I visited. There’s no shower in the room, but the onsen worked fine for me. The hotel sits rather apart in a quiet forest, which makes it a nice retreat. Each room has its own stone theme and is nicely decorated. Staff speak enough English for everyday conversation, and the service feels personal and attentive. I’d love to come back. I have lovely memories of this place.

The national park setting is beautiful, and we took a short walk from the hotel to a waterfall. We had a lovely two-night stay in mid-spring. Renovations were happening in another wing, but we weren’t disturbed. Our spacious flourite room was warm and comfortable, and the staff were friendly and helpful. Both the dinners and western breakfasts were delicious. Dinner was an excellent set course, and breakfast had breads, soup, vegetables, egg, bacon or sausages, plus filter coffee and juice.

Lovely spot for some Zen, with great food and an amazing night view inside the national park. The hotel feels cozy.
