We spent time with the hotel’s history display outside the bar before heading in. It had old keys and long holders, original china, door handle examples, turtle-pattern smoking dishes, and a timeline from its early days as the “Turtle Hotel.” The place feels thoughtfully preserved while still updated for modern use. Mampei Hotel is stunning, historic yet remodeled, and one of the most beautiful places I’ve stayed. It’s known as a reference for Studio Ghibli's The Wind Rises, and John Lennon visited too. After check-in, we were guided through several buildings, elevators, and hallways with stained glass and patterned carpets, all in a lovely retro style. Someone showed us to our dark-wood room, which had frost-patterned sliding windows, a small sitting area facing the forest, and a large white marble bathroom with a modern tub and towel warmer. The bar had counter seats and tables, and most tables were taken when we visited around 9pm. The menu covered classics and house cocktails. One bartender-created specialty, recognized in a Oct 2025 cocktail competition, mixed whiskey with tomato juice, tea, and honeyed ginger syrup. It arrived on a Hokkaido-shaped coaster, with regional glassware and ingredients. The seasonal fruit drink featured persimmon, since strawberry had sold out. For round two, we chose from the classics list, which was arranged by alcohol strength: a strong whiskey-based Godfather with a sphere of ice and a glass of water, and a Bamboo with dry vermouth and dry sherry. The Bamboo was poured at the table into a frosted glass. It smelled great and tasted complex, sharp at first, then dry and clean. The café’s apple pie, known as a favorite, had a thick, flavorful apple filling. The seasonal chestnut roll cake was light with cream. We were there in November 2025, with autumn colors all around the hotel. The shop had signature cookies in beautifully wrapped, premium-priced boxes, plus stickers, stationery, and teas that made nice gifts. I’d happily visit again.

This classic, beautiful luxury hotel has a lot of history, though it’s a bit far from the station. The café serves royal milk tea and apple pie, which they said was John Lennon's favorite. The staff were friendly, and the service was amazing.

My dearest friend held their wedding at Mampei hotel in October, and I had an amazing banquet lunch there. The banquet team were polite, efficient, attentive, and clearly well trained. My friend chose a wonderful hotel for the celebration.

The hotel’s location made it easy to explore town, and we enjoyed both the restaurant and café. The rooms were beautiful, and the service was incredible. There’s a lot of history behind the place, too.

We stayed in one of the Atago rooms and thoroughly enjoyed it. The room was well appointed, service was excellent, and the whole experience at this historic hotel was awesome.
