Mizubasho no Yado Higashi

The owner was warm and helpful. He drove me to the trail start, offered to pick me up after my trek, and gave me useful advice about the route and bus service. My room was spacious and clean, and the onsens were clean and relaxing. It was a nice stay.

A clean, basic ryokan with a good onsen and shuttle service to the ski resort. The bean pillows were extremely uncomfortable, so bring your own if you want a decent night's sleep. The pricing for kids seemed strange: 5000 yen per child for a basic Japanese breakfast. The walls are paper thin, so pack earplugs or hope you don't get a loud group next door.

The spacious tatami room was very pleasant, and the whole place was super clean and well cared for. The ofuro wall has a mosaic of Mizu-basho Asian skunk cabbage found in Oze National Park, and there are both indoor and outdoor baths. The owner was nice and helpful. On my second day he drove me to the trailhead and packed me a lunch of rice balls and green tea. The food was nicely prepared and quite delicious.

Nothing fancy, but decent value for an onsen.
