We had a wonderful two weeks at Pension Waltz, and we’re already thinking about coming back in summer for hiking. The main lift stays open, and we’d definitely stay here again. We picked Marunuma as our base for the 2025/26 season after trying lesser-known ski resorts around Japan. It was our first visit, and choosing this place worked out really well. The owner was easygoing and very friendly, and went out of his way to make our stay comfortable. It felt like staying with an old friend. The lodge has been around for more than 50 years and was one of the area’s original ski lodges. You can feel that old alpine atmosphere in the stylish vintage details throughout. Our two-room suite had a bedroom, living area, and private bathroom, with plenty of room for our gear. Strong heaters kept it cozy and helped dry everything after riding. There’s a separate ski and board room with a tuning bench for waxing and adjustments. In the evenings, you can reserve the small private ofuro. We usually went to the onsen at the ski resort instead, which was very convenient. There’s a comfortable lounge with a large TV that lets you cast your own YouTube, plus board games, comics, and a piano. Families will appreciate the toy corner. A large game room in another wing has a pool table that converts to air hockey, a punching bag, and ping pong. It’s away from the guest rooms, so the noise isn’t a concern. We ate breakfast every day and dinner on some nights. Both meals were tasty and filling, and the hearty breakfast was especially welcome before a long day on the slopes.

The boss was friendly, the meals tasted good, and the room was spacious and clean.

I only stopped by for a look on my first visit, but I’d like to stay next time. They kindly treated me to coffee. Thanks for that.

My reservation hadn’t come through because of a Booking.com booking error, but they sorted it out right away. Their hospitality was excellent, and the facilities and everything else were great too.

There are plenty of things to enjoy here, from the ping-pong table and manga to a good range of reasonably priced drinks with dinner. The common areas, bathroom, and rooms were clean, with no mold or dust, and the bathroom has a roomy washing area and four showers. The reception, hallways, and area outside the rooms were warm and had a nice feel. Some amenities are a bit dated, but still usable. Dinner was the biggest letdown. The rice tasted cheap, and the meal felt so basic that I wondered how much effort had gone into it. The soup seemed instant, the stew tasted like ordinary roux, and the gratin was bland. The steamed vegetables were good, especially with the delicious bagna cauda sauce, though they seemed simply prepared. The bread was dry and crumbly. With such a wide drink selection, the food was a shame. Service also had some small but frustrating misses. I ordered bread and was served rice, my drink wasn't put on the coaster, and the staff spoke to us as if we were friends. When I asked about the dessert sauce, they immediately asked me to repeat the question because they'd forgotten, so perhaps they need to take notes. No one noticed when I left after dinner, even though the kitchen was fully visible. The entrance had standing meltwater from the snow from the previous night, and it was still much the same in the morning. It snowed during our stay, too, and by morning snow blocked both the drying room and entrance without being cleared. A quick look around could have caught that. Kerosene containers were scattered by the drying room entrance and made it awkward to get through. I worried a child could knock one over and spill it. I chose this place with high expectations because the nearby pension area is clean, popular, and close to the ski resorts. There were more disappointing details than I expected. Still, it's a clean inn and fine if all you need is somewhere to sleep. I just wish they'd pay more attention to the little things and put in more effort. I'm rooting for them, and sorry this got so long.
