I keep coming back here, about seven or eight visits over the years, and it's still my favorite traditional onsen ryokan. The food is pretty good, and the outdoor onsen is excellent. The rooms have a Showa style style. Update, December 2024: the inner onsen has been renovated, including that distinctive wooden architectural structure. If you're looking for a traditional Japanese onsen ryokan, I'd choose this one without hesitation.

The food was delicious and had plenty of Gunma specialties: maitake mushroom and apple tempura, konjac, yuba, and Joshu pork grilled with miso. It was my first time trying seared trout, and I liked the seasoning. The meal was a little too much for me as a woman, so I left some and regretted it, lol. I wanted to finish everything. Even the pickles tasted homemade, unlike at many ryokans. Pears and Shine Muscat grapes came for dessert. The large public bath looked newly renovated and beautiful. We had it to ourselves and could relax, and the family bath was relaxing too. The inn was very clean and well maintained, and easy to find facing the street. I'd definitely stay again.

The spring water is clear, odorless, and alkaline, and it feels gentle on the skin, leaving it smooth. There is one indoor and one open-air bath for each gender, and they switch sides at 10 PM. The family bath is available whenever it's unoccupied.

I stayed here on the way back from a walk in Oze. The woman at the front desk was especially kind during dinner, and I'd like to thank her. The man at reception was also kind and polite. I heard that many well-known people and celebrities stay here. There are lots of artworks displayed along the hallway walls. 2025.10.23

This is a standout place to stay in the Oze Katashina area. There are good ski resorts around here, but the area hasn't been developed as a resort, so many facilities are simple. This lodging has what you need to feel welcome. It has a retro roadside-inn concept, with umbrellas at the entrance and in the bath. The feel is more sophisticated than old-fashioned. The indoor bath has been renovated and smells of fresh cypress, a sign that they're still improving the place. The food, including the mountain dishes, was delicious and felt local. Smoked rainbow trout is the inn's specialty, with a great aroma and texture. The tofu was excellent too. They serve it in a basket at dinner and again in the morning, perhaps because they know how good it is. Maybe the water helps as well. In winter the open-air baths require walking outside and are closed, so bathing options are limited then. If you're heading to a ski resort or hiking in Oze, the location may be a bit far away, but I still prefer staying here.
