It's a quiet place in the middle of nowhere, with fresh air and spacious rooms. Opening the door, you get a strong hit of the tatami smell. The toilet and bathroom are tiny, though. I'm only 5'4", and my knees almost touched the door when I sat on the toilet, so keep that in mind if you're around average Western height and weight. The room felt stuffy, but opening the balcony door let in the mountain air. We enjoyed our one-night stay even though the hotel isn't modern. The spa was relaxing once I got used to the traditional full nudity, with separate areas for men and women. The evening buffet had plenty to choose from. It seems aimed more at Japanese guests, but staff greeted us warmly despite our sauna faux pas. Look up sauna etiquette beforehand, it'll make the experience more enjoyable.

We booked four rooms for the nights of March 5-10 with my friends. Housekeeping was very poor. They didn't clean, saying they only did my bed because a charging cable was beside it. I raised this with the manager three times, and the only response was, “I don't know English.” The reception staff seemed very unprofessional and unfriendly. This experience left me feeling very uncomfortable and gave me a terrible impression of Japan. We are Taiwanese.

The onsen had an unbearable musty smell. The building and rooms are old too, and dust had collected around the air conditioner vent. It needs a full renovation if the hotel wants to attract more guests.

I've stayed here several times, and it seems more dated every time I return. The food is decent, but it has to serve large family groups, so there's more focus on quantity than quality. It's not bad, just not especially good.

The staff were friendly, and the room was large and comfortable, though the bathroom was small. There's a scenic view of the volcano in the distance across the harbor.
