We stayed five nights, longer than many people who seemed to come for just one or two, and by the end we were already wishing we could return for a month. The local feel was a big part of the appeal. We walked to lots of places, including the Kyoto Imperial Palace, and loved finding neighborhood bakeries with fresh bread and pastries in the morning. For the main tourist sights, you’ll need a bus, but getting there was straightforward, including Bus 9 from Kyoto Station to Umeya. Our upstairs room was a little bigger than a small tatami room. We didn’t get a chance to take photos, and while the steep stairs were fun to go up and down, hauling luggage was hard. Anyone who has trouble with stairs should book a first-floor room. The house is old, but very quiet, and we barely noticed other guests coming and going. The bathroom is tiny, though that was part of the distinctive, authentic feel. This was our first guesthouse stay, and we loved it.

The owner was so thoughtful about our changing travel plans, and we’re very grateful for how warmly she looked after us. Guest House Umeya is a beautiful traditional space, and we loved our time there. I’d recommend staying here without hesitation.

As a solo traveler, I had a really good experience with the staff. They were wonderful and made me feel special. The house has traditional styling that makes it feel like stepping into a movie, though the shower room is small. It’s extremely affordable, so that felt fair for the price. Getting there takes a bit of effort since you have to use the bus, but it wasn’t awful. A lovely little hidden gem in Kyoto, and I’d especially recommend it to women traveling alone.

We could have stayed longer. It’s a traditional place with futon bedding, a nice atmosphere, and a thoughtfully arranged little kitchen area. The downside is that it’s a bit far from notable places, restaurants included. Buses are dependable, though they don’t come very often, and the stops are a little walk away.
