The onsen was the best part for me. Each reservation can choose one type of private onsen. We asked reception before dinner whether any evening slots were free, and luckily got to enjoy two different kinds during our stay. I’d heard deer might be visible near the onsen, but I didn’t see any 😓 The meals were simple and healthy, though nothing especially memorable. The service was excellent, and the staff spoke English well, so communication was no problem. If you’re planning a trip to Kirishima, I’d highly recommend this as one of the best hotel choices.

The food was great, served by really nice staff, and the staff were helpful and very, very kind about every detail. We were the only foreign guests. You can choose your favorite yukatan, and there’s a shop, a large guest room, a Hifi room, and more. The rooms are comfortable and beautiful, with a breathtaking view of the sakuratjima Vulkan. There are dozens of paintings of it around the Hotel, which are beautiful too. I highly recommend trying the privat baths. The onsen is small and has no Sauna, but you can walk through the forest to nearby waterfalls. This is one of a Kind ryokojin. If you get the chance to visit, just do it.

It’s such a good place for a digital detox. Nature all around, plus a library and different activities offered by the hotel, so I never felt bored. It was easy to forget everyday life and really unwind. Honestly, it’s paradise for anyone who loves onsen. I almost don’t want too many people to discover it (haha). I loved it and will definitely come back.

The sulfur onsen was pleasantly milky and the view was great. I tried the day-use bath. The place is a little old and tired compared with other ryokans, but it still has its charm. I wish there were more amenities, like lotion on the dressing table.

I’d give this place seven or eight stars if I could. Anyone who prefers staying outside the city should try it. The room had a direct view of sunset and Sakurajima, and the ryokan has four private onsen in addition to the usual public bath. They emailed me well ahead of time to arrange reservations. Breakfast and dinner are included each day, and I liked that they made sure dinner wasn’t the same every night. I’d been worried about that, but by the second evening I knew there was no need. The care here goes well beyond the meals. Staff took our luggage from the car as soon as we arrived, and reception explained the important details of our stay and showed us to our room. We stayed in a Japanese-style room, and housekeeping made up the bedding every morning, then laid it out again while we were at dinner. On our first day there were free snacks in the room, but we were too full after the delicious dinner to eat them. I assumed that was all we’d get, but while packing to leave I saw that the basket was full, with three times what had been there on the first night. We travel often and no hotel has ever done that for us. Ryokojin Sanso is super affordable for this level of service. Good job, Ryokojin Sanso! If I ever return to Kirishima in my lifetime, I’ll stay here again.
