The ride across the inland sea was calm, which was a relief for my wife, who gets seasick. She felt fine throughout. We also found the Deluxe room surprisingly spacious, bigger than some hotel rooms we've had in Japan, and the beds were comfortable. We took the Meimon Taiyo Ferry from Kitakyushu to Osaka on the 5:00 PM sailing, arriving at 5:30 AM. The buffet dinner was enjoyable, though it isn't going to win culinary awards. Getting to the terminal was simple with the free shuttle from Kitakyushu. The site listed a 3:40 PM bus for our sailing; we reached the stop at 3:15, where a line was already forming. The bus came at 3:30, and we boarded without trouble for the 40-minute trip. It was a fun, unusual way to travel between Kyushu and Osaka, and could suit someone after a more relaxed trip away from the usual routes.

Our Deluxe room felt like staying in a hotel, and the ferry hardly rocked at all. I loved going under the bridges and got to see Akashi Kaikyo Bridge and Seto Ohashi bridge. Kurushima Kaikyo bridge was too late at night for me to catch. The restaurant was a letdown: the food seemed mass-produced, and even though I had bought a ticket with meals included, there was a long line to get in. I saw people bringing their own food, and microwaves were available. There were free buses between ShinMoji port and Kokura station. Still, I love this ferry!

I had a great trip and would highly recommend it. Dinner is a must. I'd pick the later 7pm departure, so you get into Osaka around 7:30am and can have a good night's sleep.

After taking the Shinkansen to Kyushu before and flying there in the past, I can say this ferry is simply the best. I wish I'd booked it for my return trip too.
