The meals made each day feel easy: our Kaiseki service was wonderfully hospitable, and breakfast was filling and refreshing, so we had energy through the day and slept well at night. The room was comfortable and had a beautiful view. We were grateful to stay in such a lovely, historic home and enjoyed the authentic experience. Everyone we met was kind and patient with the language barrier, especially Nakayama- San, whose English was excellent. We enjoyed it so much that we hope to return someday. If this would be your first Kitakyushu stay, I’d say don’t hesitate to book Suisui.

The path into the ryokan is narrow and has several steps, so it could be tough with luggage or for anyone with mobility limitations. Still, our weekday stay at Suisui Garden Ryokan was great value. The room was spacious, clean, and restful after a day out, and breakfast brought different local dishes each day, which was a special way to sample the region. The hospitality was lovely, and it felt like a peaceful, authentic stay. Just expect a bit of a climb on the way in.

I hadn’t planned the trip myself, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. The food and service turned out excellent, and the staff were friendly and helpful. We all spoke Japanese, so I can’t say how well they accommodate guests who don’t, though I think the staff would do their best. The ryokan has three cottage-like Japanese-style rooms beside a lovely old garden, within the grounds of a modern hotel. We stayed in the largest room, which was enormous.

The hotel is old, but it’s clean and beautiful. The staff were rude and unfriendly, though, and that made the trip feel bad.

There are just three ryokan rooms, with the rest being regular hotel rooms. Ours was large. Dinner and breakfast were set meals served in the restaurant, not in the room.
