A nice, quiet place. 💕
My top choice.
The staff were very helpful. We arrived after dark to find a narrow, rough entrance and an old ryokan-style hotel spread over two floors, with no elevator. Our room was in a separate building some distance away, and getting to the public onsen meant quite a walk. There was no bathroom in the room.
I visited in July 2025. The inn has a historic feel, though it doesn't seem especially old-fashioned. Maybe it was a lovely place in the past. It's quiet because it's a little away from the main tourist area, and from the private pier you get a spectacular view of Mount Bandai. You can't see that view from the main tourist area, which by itself seems to make the visit worthwhile. The hot spring seems to come from its own source. They said they add mountain spring water to soften it, and it is heated. There was no mention of circulation filtration, which seems unlikely, and they use disinfectant, though I didn't notice its smell. The hot spring feeling was quite weak. There was only an indoor bath, with no open-air bath.
The food was excellent, with ingredients and seasonings brought together by the chefs' skilled hands. But the room view was what stopped me in my tracks. I checked in at 3pm planning to go for a leisurely walk, then ended up stretching out in the room and spending the day looking at Sakurajima, Mt. Bandai, the crater, and Lake Hibara, formed by the eruption.
