The food was a real highlight, with French and Italian touches alongside Japanese cuisine. We had kaiseki dinners and buffet breakfasts on both days, and the staff accommodated our food allergies. After dinner, they also brought onigiri to our room. Free drinks in the lobby and lounge included coffee and alcoholic options like beer, wine, cider, and sake. After the onsen, there were complimentary cold drinks, including yogurt, fresh milk, and coffee milk. The staff were wonderful too. When I mentioned we were celebrating my parent’s birthday, they left a small bottle of cider, snacks, and a birthday card in the room. We stayed in room 301 on the top floor. It was spacious, with a high ceiling, a comfortable armchair, and a tatami seating area. The building has a wood cabin feel, but although it’s old, it had been renovated and felt modern, with Scandinavian-inspired furnishings. The lobby and lounge were comfortable, and all of this felt amazing for the price. There’s a free shuttle to and from Inawashiro station, though it’s best to check the schedule on the website. The hotel lends out gumboots, jackets, gloves, hiking sticks, and bear bells for free. In mid-April, gumboots are essential for the Goshikinuma ponds, since there’s still a lot of wet, melting snow. Urabandai visitor centre and Bishamonnuma, the Goshikinuma trailhead, are an easy 15-20 minute walk away. Booking through the hotel website was difficult because it was entirely in Japanese, but I’m glad I managed it. This was one of the best hotels I’ve stayed at in Japan, and I’ve stayed at plenty of ryokans.

The dining was a highlight of our four-day stay. Hotelli Aalto uses local ingredients, especially from the Aizu area and elsewhere in Fukushima, and serves a mix of Japanese and French food. The meals were tasty, healthy, and satisfying, and they accommodated my food allergies. There was also a great selection of local sake, craft beer, and wine. After a day out, the natural hot springs were a lovely way to relax amid the scenery. This was our second visit, and the peaceful atmosphere, good food, and hot springs made it just as memorable as the first. Hotelli Aalto is tucked into the beautiful Urabandai area of Fukushima Prefecture, with modern comforts and striking natural surroundings. There’s plenty to do in Urabandai throughout the year. Winter brings skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing. In spring, there are cherry blossoms and scenic walks or picnics. Summer is good for hiking, mountain biking, and kayaking on the lakes. In autumn, you can enjoy the colorful foliage on hikes or visit the Goshikinuma ponds. The landscape changes with the seasons, so each trip feels different. It was a refreshing break from everyday life, and I can’t wait to return.

The frog concert during the bath visit really stood out. The frogs were incredibly loud! There are so many thoughtful details here, and TWO ranks above a lot of other places. Staff spend 10-15 minutes giving a very detailed introduction. There’s a full fridge on arrival, a forest walking course, and free drinks as well as a paid menu. They promote regional products and services too. The stay included dinner, an evening snack, breakfast buffet, and access to the Club Lounge from 11:00-17:00.

I want to thank the HOTELLI aalto staff for helping my mother when she got lost on the trail at Goshikinuma Ponds on October 29. She was visiting with a senior group from Taiwan and couldn’t find her way back, so she went into the hotel to ask for help. Although her English was limited, the staff went out of their way to assist and personally drove her back to the tour bus so she could return safely. Their kindness went beyond what you’d expect from hotel service.

The area was beautiful and the hotel lovely. They treated me like an individual, not just another visitor.
