The hot spring, tatami room, and dinner were in line with what I expected. The hotel is large and a bit rundown. A friend who travels in Japan told me that natural hot springs elsewhere cost less than this city one, but I didn't mind trying it once, and I'd like to visit other hot springs in Japan in the future. I came in by international flight and connecting buses with my luggage, expecting to find a taxi or shuttle at the bus station. There wasn't one, so I hauled everything up to the hotel lobby. Only then did I learn that I could have called the hotel for a free shuttle to pick us up. I emailed before leaving but wasn't told how the shuttle worked, and got the impression taxis would be waiting. Please be aware that you can call the hotel to collect you.

The onsens were my favorite part, both the indoor and outdoor ones. They change them daily, so the views differ, and you can book a private onsen for an extra charge. The location is very central. The staff were lovely, and the place has an old-fashioned charm. It's somewhat dated, but well maintained.

I didn't stay overnight, just used the onsen and lunch package. The food was very nice, and next time I'd love to stay a night. I got to use 1 no Yu and 3 no Yu completely alone, which I could hardly believe. It was one of the best onsens I've experienced in Japan, and left both my body and mind relaxed and refreshed.

The west block gave us a nice view of the town. The public onsen, kaiseki dinner, and buffet breakfast were the best parts. The hotel has a long history, and that shows in the slightly dated feel of the building. It's also huge, with several blocks and many floors, so it may not feel very cozy.

We had Kobe dinner in our room and used both the public onsen and a booked private one. I have celiac disease, and they prepared the meal so I could enjoy all that wonderful food too. Let them know about dietary restrictions or allergies ahead of time. English is quite limited, so bring a translation app and be sure to follow the rules. This was the most magical part of our whole Japan trip!
