The hot spring water was heavenly, and my room was replenished with hot green tea each time I came back from a soak. Kamiobou is a peaceful, lovely ryokan for an overnight stay at Arima Onsen. Its baths welcome tattooed foreigners, which I confirmed beforehand. I even arrived in a sleeveless shirt to avoid any surprises. There are two baths in a plain, tile-finished bathing room: the muddy "gold" one fits two comfortably, while the clear "silver" bath could probably take four. Staff were gracious and spoke some English. Most signs are only in Japanese, though there was an English guide to onsen etiquette in my room. Read it, and learn the kanji for men and women so you don't end up at the wrong bath or toilet. Breakfast was traditional Japanese, and the crispy-skinned salmon was especially tasty.

I liked pretty much everything, including the spa and the owner's kindness. They had yukata for us and served Aubanzai(japanese traditional breakfast I guess) in the morning. In winter the hallway gets really cold, though, and the heater made the room too dry.

The building felt quite old, but my room was beautiful and the onsen was great, if a little dungeon-like. Service was excellent and the kaisecki course was good.
