Once we got inside, the room was beautiful and clean, with complete amenities and soft Japanese futton. We had building C to ourselves and a nice view of the forrest. The bento box had gone cold by the time we were ready for dinner, but it was still delicious and filling. The fridge was stocked with all sorts of drinks, including a bottle of beer per person. Breakfast was four kinds of brotchen with jam and butter. After the hike, it felt almost like heaven. Getting in took some effort. Three days before our arrival, they sent a four-digit number for a small booth by the entrance. Inside, we had to scan a QR code, enter our details, scan our passports, then talk to someone over Skype to get the codes for the building and our room. We needed good wifi for all of this. We nearly couldn’t enter building C because they’d only sent one code, though we needed two. The food delivery person kindly helped us get the missing one. It took them a good ten minutes, and I can’t imagine how long it would have taken us without speaking Japanese.

The rooms are beautiful, and it’s a great location on the Komano Kodo pilgrimage walk. Dinner and breakfast are bento boxes. Check-in was mostly okay, but a bit complicated: you need a smartphone, then call an operator who sends you a PIN for the room.

The facility is brand new and respects local traditions, and the bento dinner was decent. But checking in was a nightmare. You have to do it yourself in a phone booth using a tablet to connect with someone at a call center. The connection was poor and the audio terrible. It took me 45 minutes to check in. Once I finally got the room access code, the tablet app crashed, and getting connected again took another 30 minutes. The tablet was set to Japanese, so restarting the app was almost impossible. I had questions during my stay too, but there was nobody at the facility, so I had to keep them to myself.

Dinner and breakfast came in generous portions, along with beer, beverages, and ice cream. The facility sits on a hill and is lovely, with a warm room and good bedding. There’s no staff on-site, but it’s well stocked and has a washer and dryer. Our room, and I believe most rooms, had its own toilet, though the shower room is shared with others staying in the same 'building'.

A modern, minimalist retreat house on the Kumano Kodo trail in Takahara. The rooms are comfortable, with excellent facilities including a washer and dryer. You can arrange to have a bento dinner delivered when you book. There’s no staff on-site. You need the confirmation code from your reservation to enter a little hut by the house and get the code to enter.
