The staff were pleasant and helpful, but the place wasn’t right for us, and we left within an hour of checking in for a proper hotel. We had booked through Kumano-Travel and were clear about what we wanted. Rooms 205 and 206 in building 2 were bare, with only a folded mattress on the floor, and didn’t seem clean. The room photos on the hotel website were very misleading. We expected beds, chairs, a TV, and attached showers, but found a rolled up mattress. At over $150 a night, I could understand this if it were priced like a budget hotel at $50 or less. I also had safety concerns because nobody asked for IDs before handing us the room keys. The entrance areas of buildings 1 and 2 were dirty, cluttered with shoes, towels, and cleaning supplies, and smelled bad. Building 1’s onsen had broken wall tiles and looked as if it had algae and hadn’t been cleaned. There are cats in building 1; they’re cute and on a leash, but the common areas smelled of cats and cat litter was the first thing you saw on entering. The rooms have attached toilets, but the shared sinks are outside the rooms on each floor. Shared showers are only on the ground floor and looked dirty. Our rooms were on the second and third floors, and there’s no lift.
