The room was tidy, had the usual amenities, and got cleaned every day. The bed itself was comfortable, though its brown cover looked a bit worn. I couldn’t get on with the hard, pebble-filled Japanese pillow, so I used the spare winter blanket as a pillow instead. The bath and toilet had a strange smell, but I could tolerate it. I stayed three nights last week for a short work assignment, and the hotel is less than 50 steps from Tanabe station’s entrance. The staff on my first night were really nice.

We got a late check-in, which is why I gave it one star. The place felt creepy and dirty, and the rooms seemed old and unclean. Someone kept pacing up and down the corridor all night. I wouldn’t be surprised if the yakuza were doing business here. If you want a scary, unsettling stay before hiking Kumamoto Kodo, this might be for you.

It’s got a proud Showa feel, and the location is great. Kind of like a country version of Shibuya.

Breakfast was delicious, but I saw staff smoking. The price was hard to justify: 6,500 yen, or 7,000 yen with breakfast. At 5,000 yen, I might have said a place like this was to be expected. My room faced the station rotary, and the rooms on the other side are close to the neighboring building, so they’re practically windowless. Noise carried through the hallways, including doors opening and closing, and the air conditioner was noisy too. The room hadn’t been cleaned properly, and the bathtub didn’t look properly scrubbed. I also found some strange things floating in my eye.

The parking is a little way off, but they showed me where it was when I checked in. The inn is right by Tanabe Station and close to Ajikoji, which makes it handy. Finding the front desk can take a moment. The entrance is downstairs from a corner of the arcade, and although there’s a sign, it’s easy to miss.
