A quiet place for a break on the Nakahechi trail, with a personal touch to the ryokan experience. The food was great, and so was the natural onsen. It's a well-kept, 100-year-old ryokan that remains a family business. The owner is 98 and still climbs the stairs, very fit for her age. It's a little off the beaten track, though there's a bus stop right outside and the nearest Lawson is an 800-meter walk.

We came across this place by chance and were glad we did. The building is old, but the food and service were fantastic. The thermal water felt silky, just as people say, and everything was very well managed.

The owners were so kind, and the whole area had a lovely peaceful feel. I only wish we'd booked more than two nights, we definitely want to return someday. The spacious room had a beautiful view, and I loved the onsen. Both meals were amazing, especially the Amago and mountain vegetables.
