Minshuku Sumiya

The riverside setting is the real treat here. You can dig a little pool with a shovel and let the hot spring water come up through the riverbank, and we stayed there for hours. The guesthouse rooms were comfortable, the owner was lovely, and both dinner and breakfast were delicious. We really enjoyed our time here.

The river was our favorite part of staying here. You can dig a small bath in the bank and hot spring water bubbles up naturally, which felt amazing. Sumiya was a wonderful place to stay too. The host made us feel at home and went out of his way to make sure we had what we needed, and the food was delicious. Kawayu Onsen is a small, peaceful town with a clear river and lovely nature all around. Its calm, authentic atmosphere feels far from the crowds.

We spent three nights in this magical spot, right beside the hot river where you can dig your own onsen. We booked some meals ahead. Both dinners were delightful, one regular and one vegetarian, and the dinner was amazing. You don't have to book meals, since there are several restaurants and coffee places nearby. One thing to know is that the room walls are very thin, which can be difficult.

There was plenty of space in the clean room, and the Japanese futon was really comfortable. The hosts were friendly and helpful. We had breakfast, a bento lunch, and dinner, all tasty and generous portions. Great location too, and swimming on a hot day is well worth it.
