The owner was super kind, spoke English, and gave me loads of advice for the kumano kodo trail. He even drove me to the start of the trail the next morning. It’s a peaceful guesthouse in a remote area, surrounded by lovely nature. My traditional japanese-style room was simple and perfectly clean. I could keep the snacks and breakfast things I’d bought in the fridge, and there was coffee and tea in the room. A great place to begin the trail. I hope I can return!

The guesthouse sits high on hilly ground in a village, with lovely mountain and surrounding views and fresh air. The rooms are cosy, spacious, and simple, a good rest stop for anyone walking the Kumano Kodo. If you’re driving, ask the owner for directions because it can be tricky to find. Without transport, the owner can pick you up. Meals aren’t provided, just coffee and tea, but there are microwaves for heating your own food. Supermarkets and Lawson are about 15-30 minutes away.

The owners’ friendliness and helpfulness stood out most. They spoke English with no problem, picked us up, and took us to the Kumano Kodo starting point the next day, so we felt very well cared for. The rooms were lovingly decorated in a traditional style, with lots of small touches that made the place special. It’s a beautiful place to begin a hike, and I absolutely recommend it.

For Kumano hikers starting at Takijiri-oji, the host can provide shuttle rides. Bring dinner and food for the next day, though, since there’s no mention of meals. A fridge in the room, hot water, and a microwave are available. The service and accommodations were incredible. It’s a special place with solitude and sunsets you won’t forget, the kind that can bring you to tears.

A traditional Japanese room with a lovely view, and Simon was a really caring host. A great place to set off for the Komano Kodo hike.
