The reception staff were friendly, though they spoke Japanese only. We came by car and stayed in one of the cottages, which was well equipped and clean, with friendly service and a lovely position beside the Oto River. If you’re walking the Kumano Kodo, it could work despite being away from Hongu, and I’d recommend it whether or not you’re doing the pilgrimage. There are two bath options. Watarase Onsen is five minutes away and has outdoor pools, but I didn’t feel the JPY1,000 charge was worthwhile since the in-house baths are free. Note that those baths close from 9pm until 1pm.

We loved the river and onsen here. It’s a great campground for the Kumano Kodo. If you’re walking from Chikatsuyu, leave early enough to catch the last bus from Hongu to the campground, around 4:30.

We only stayed one night, but the service was good, the staff were very friendly, and the little hut was excellent. The Onsen across the river is just a three-minute walk away, and they provide towels for free.

I couldn’t tell whether they have a campground for tents, as we didn’t see one. The place is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
