Hotel Danrokan

Danrokan isn't a stylish hotel, but I think it's a great place to experience authentic Japanese culture and spirit. The building is old, though very clean and well maintained. I could feel the staff's passion and strong self-discipline, and noticed lots of thoughtful details. I enjoyed the whole stay.

The walls throughout the hotel are marked and stained, and the place feels dirty, old, and traditional. The pillows are flat and only an inch thick, while the bed has a very old box spring. The bath was a 0/10 for me, with mold buildup and rusty metal in the water. No way. I don't know if the people giving this more than one star are grateful angels or fake accounts. Avoid it at all costs. For what they charge, you can do better.

The double room on the fourth floor was spacious, and we could see what looked like gardens on the third floor, perhaps premium rooms. The onsen was small and a little disappointing, but the water seemed to come from a proper mineral source. Service was polite and the food decent. It's centrally located in Kofu and relatively budget priced, though worn carpets, the onsen entrance, and dining room walls could use refurbishment.

I went expecting a hot spring, but they refused to let me bathe in it. It felt like they discriminate against foreigners. This was the worst hotel I've ever stayed at, and I don't even want to give it one star.
