All around you it's beautiful nature, with a private onsen, good food and attentive service. The place has real care for tradition, and you can feel it. It feels like stepping into another era, where everything slows down. You mostly hear water trickling, firewood crackling, and footsteps far off on the wooden floor. I'd highly recommend it.

Cold Hell and Hot Hell The bus ride from Oita Airport takes over three hours, but it was worth it. Dinner around the hearth was outstanding, and the hospitality was just as good. The cold spring is chilling, and air moving around the wood stove makes breathing feel warm but comfortable.

The food was tasty, with some unusual options like horse meat sashimi and chicken sashimi. Over our two nights, they varied dinner for us, serving hotpot one evening and yakiniku the other. There are three private onsens, free to use and first come, first served. At many other hotels, you'd need to book and pay extra. The hotel is also only about a 10-minute drive from the ski resort. For the price, it's a very decent onsen hotel and I'd recommend it.

Getting here without a car is an adventure on its own, and you do have to get used to the sulfur smell. Once there, though, we had a great time at this lovely ryokan, with excellent food and really nice staff. They spent ages helping us plan a trek in the nearby mountains, drove us close to the trail, and waited for us to return so they could take us to the bus station.

This cold-water onsen is open only in summer, and it's so cold! After a couple of dips you sort of get used to it. I felt great and full of energy for the rest of the day after going.
